Having lived in the Los Angeles area for many years, I am aware of its wonderful cultural melting pot, with the counterintuitive reflection of segregation. Different ethnicities and levels of wealth disperse into distinct communities. The grid lines I formed over the entire painting convey the invisible fences that separate "us" from "them."

In creating LA Layers, I was also influenced by the physical elements. A birds-eye-view makes it possible to witness this massive, endless grid of buildings, streets and neighborhoods. These are in turn intersected by even larger defining lines like mountains, winding freeways and concrete waterways.
